Meteor Shower Over NJ This Weekend
It’s Friday so we thought we’d mix in a quick blog post about something other than car accidents, workers’ comp and medical malpractice. Don’t worry, we’ll have more posts discussing slips and falls, accident injuries and other serious topics coming soon…but for now, who is ready to see a meteor shower?!
The Orionid Meteor Shower 2017
The Orionid meteor shower lights up the night sky every year towards the end of October in “one of the most beautiful showers of the year,” according to NASA.
This weekend, with the lack of moonlight, skies will be dark and star gazers around the Garden State will have their best chance to see a show from space.
Some quick tips courtesy of your favorite New Jersey Personal Injury Law Firm (and mostly from space.com).
Best Time for Viewing the Meteor Shower
Meteors have already been flying across the sky sporadically since October 15, but the peak will occur in the early hours of Saturday (October 21st) and Sunday (October 22nd).
The best time for viewing each morning is around 2am and the hours leading up to dawn. Finding a spot with limited light pollution is ideal, but that’s easier said than done for many in New Jersey’s more urban areas.
Accident Lawyer note: Remember distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents, so drivers should pull over before trying to catch the meteor shower.
Where to Look
How Many Meteors Can be Seen?
According to space.com, the Orionid shower sometimes peaks at 80 meteors per hour, and at other times, it’s closer to 20 or 30. The prediction for this year is that it will likely be on the lower end of that scale.
What Are the Meteors?
The meteors in the Orionid Meteor Shower are actually leftovers from Halley’s Comet.
Does anyone else remember that time back in the 80’s when your parents asked you to put down the Atari controller and go outside to look at something in space that only comes once every 75 years?
I decided to instead go for the high score in Space Invaders and take my chances on seeing the comet in 2061. A reasonable choice at the time.
Why is a Law Firm Writing About Meteor Showers?
Great question. We’ll need to get back to you on that one.
In the meantime, happy hunting and have a great weekend!
